Flat Tire Ends Hathaway’s Night at Jukasa

Hagersville, Ontario- September 3, 2018- Hathaway, as defending winner of the Inaugural Short Track Nationals at Jukasa Motor Speedway in 2017, was looking forward to a great repeat finish at the 2018 event this past weekend. After being fast all day, a flat tire ended Hathaway’s chances of a top place finish on Sunday night.

The #3 Kubota Chevrolet was fast right off the trailer. The team tuned on the car during the rain shortened practice in the early afternoon and Hathaway was pretty comfortable in the car.

The 42-car field was packed will some of the best late model short track talent that Canada and the US had to offer. With a $50,000 first place finish payout the Team came with their A-game and was well prepared.

Hathaway qualified 5th in the field.

The pace was quick right off the drop of the green flag and by lap 31 Hathaway was up in the top 3 in the running order. Hathaway logged laps in the 200-lap event as the top 5 cars broke off into a pack of their own.

When the mandatory break came on lap 97, Hathaway’s car had tightened up and he had slipped back to 5th. Crew Chief, Craig Masters bought Hathaway down pit road and serviced the car with fuel, tires and adjustments for the 2nd half of the race.

Hathaway got a great restart when the green flew after the break and pulled into 4th. Once again, the top 5 cars broke away from the field.

On lap 124 Hathaway earned 3rd and was poised for a great 75 lap run to the checkered flag when his race machine blew a right front tire on the fastest part of the race track sending him hard into the outside wall, ending his night.

Hathaway was checked out by the Track medical staff and released.

“That was a big hit tonight.” Said Hathaway “It’s too bad really, we were having a good race, running in the top 5 all day long. We have been surrounded by some of the best talent in late model circles today, which was really cool. The track put on a great event. ”

14th Place at CTMP for Powell

Bowmanville, Ontario- August 25th , 2018– Coming off of an awesome 2nd place finish at Riverside Speedway,  Ed Hakonson Racing/Team 3 Red and driver Cole Powell ran their final road course race this weekend posting a 14th place finish.

Practice on Saturday afternoon was tough as Powell struggled to get the rhythm of the track and balance in his race machine. The Team ended practice in the 20th spot.

The skies opened up with a late afternoon rain and washed out qualifying for the NASCAR Pinty’s Series. The Team would start 20th in the field for Sunday mornings’ Total Quartz Energy 200.

The focus for Powell and the Team for the race Sunday morning was to learn, make adjustments throughout the race and get their #3 Kubota/Copp’s Build All Chevrolet back towards the front.

With the drop of the green flag, Powell picked up a spot right away and continued to log laps and providing feedback to the Team for adjustments. Crew Chief Craig Masters brought Powell in for fuel on lap 12 under green and tires under caution on lap 18. It was all front for Powell from there as he worked his way through the 10 turns of the prestigious road course.

Powell made some great on track passes and brought his #3 Chevrolet home 14th in the finishing order.

“Like anything else, road course racing takes time and practice to be really good at,” said Team Owner Ed Hakonson. “Cole made some progress today and we just need to keep fine tuning with seat time and feedback on the car. It’s onto 3 ovals to finish the season and we are confident that the Team we have here will have some success to close out the season.”

Powell is now tied for 3rd in the Championship points battle as the Team get a week off before heading to the bullring at St Eustache, Quebec, just north of Montreal on September 8th.

2nd Place Finish at Riverside for E.H.R.

Antigonish, NS – August 20TH , 2018- After a complete rain out of the day’s activities on Saturday morning, Ed Hakonson Racing/Team 3 Red and driver Cole Powell ran the high banks of the Maritimes’ premier track; Riverside Speedway, yesterday coming away with a 2nd place finish.

The Team was able to practice on Sunday morning, posting a 10th place on the speed charts. Without being able to run qualifying on Saturday, NASCAR instituted their rain policy and started the race based on current points standings.

Team driver Cole Powell was sitting 4th in points heading into the Bumper to Bumper event and started from outside row number 2 on Sunday afternoon.

The 300 lap event at Riverside is known for having long green-flag runs and Powell kept his #3 Copp’s Buildall/Kubota Chevrolet in the top 5. He came to the attention of the E.H.R pit crew during one of the optional breaks on lap 225 for tires and fuel on his race machine.

Powell restarted 4th in the running order and on lap 240 earned 3rd and finally pulled into the runner up spot on lap 242. Powell held off hard charges for position from 3rd place, while managing to close the gap that the leader had created as the leaders worked through lapped traffic. Powell simply ran out of laps to earn the top spot on the podium. He finished a well deserved 2nd.

“This was another great day for this team,” said Jason Hathaway as the Team was in post-race technical inspection. “We have had great success here in the past and it was great to see Cole have the same.”

The Team will head to the last road course of the 2018 season this coming weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park as part of the NASCAR TRUCK Series weekend in the Total Energy 200 on Sunday morning.

11th Place Finish for Powell at GP3R

Trois Rivieres, Quebec- August 12, 2018- Ed Hakonson Racing/Team 3 Red and driver Cole Powell competed in their 3rd road course race of the 2018 NPS season this weekend at Le Tours 50 CAN-AM, bringing home a 11th place finish.

This was the first time that Powell had visited the famous 11-turn street course. Powell practiced well on Saturday and qualified 17th in a tight field.

The main event took place Sunday afternoon. Under the direction of Jason Hathaway and Team Spotter Jeff Gotelaer, Powell took the green flag for the 50-lap event. By the half way point of the race, Powell had found some rhythm and was positioned 12th in the running order.

After the mandatory competition yellow for pit stops the #3 Copp’s Buildall/Kubota Chevrolet battled for position and endured numerous caution periods. Starting from the 9th spot on the grid for what would be the last restart of the day, Powell challenged for 8th, but was relegated back to 11th where he took the checkered flag.

“This was a good end to our third road course this season. The car handled well and I learned a ton this weekend. The crowd here at Trois Rivieres is pretty awesome and the track puts on a great event.” Said Powell.

The Team will travel to Riverside Speedway in Antigonish, Nova Scotia next Saturday for the Bumper to Bumper 300.

Top 5 to End Western Swing at EIR for Powell

Wetaskiwin, Alberta-July 29, 2018- After a very successful doubleheader event at Wyant Group Speedway on Wednesday night, posting the Team’s first win of 2018 and a 2nd place finish, the Team took their

#3 Copp’s Buildall/Kubota Chevrolet to a 4th place finish at Edmonton International Raceway in the LUXXOR 300.

The car practiced well, but a slip up during his qualifying efforts posted Powell in the 11th starting spot. Based on how the car practiced earlier in the day, Crew Chief Craig Masters was confident in their race machine and the Team’s ability to work their way to the front of the field and finish well.

At the mandatory half-way break on lap 152, the team made a few adjustments to the car and sent Powell back out with fresh tires and fuel to take him to the end. By lap 230 Powell was 4th in the running order.

The race ran green for the next 68 laps until the caution came out on lap 268. A spin in corner 4 gave the drivers a break from the quick pace that the leaders had set to catch their breath.

With only 5 cars on the lead lap, the team stayed out on the track under the caution and when the field went green on lap 280, Powell challenged for the top 3, but was held off as the laps wore down and finished a strong 4th place when the checkers flew.

“The plan tonight was to learn, keep out of trouble and finish in the top 10. Bringing the car home 4th is a great way to finish up the western swing out here. I can’t say enough about The Team and the car that they gave me while we have been out here. Our spotter Jeff took good care of me on the track and out of trouble.” Said Powell after the 300-lap event.

Longtime E.H.R. Crew Chief Craig Masters was proud of the results of the western swing. “We have a dedicated group of smart and hardworking guys that is unrivaled in the Series. They regrouped after the tough weekend at the Indy and brought with us a great race piece for Cole this week. I’m proud to be a part of this Team and what we have accomplished this season so far.”

E.H.R will maintain their 2nd place in the Championship points standings as they head into an off weekend. The next event for the Team will be at the road course of GP3R in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, August 11 & 12th.

Saskatoon, SK-July 26, 2018- The E.H.R. Team and driver of the #3 Copp’s Buildall/Kubota Chevrolet, Cole Powell, started the NASCAR Pinty’s Series western swing off in style last night as the Team brought home a 2nd place finish in the first race of the double header event and posted Powell’s first NPS victory of the season.

Powell started 4th in the first 125 lap feature event in the Velocity Prairie Thunder Twin 125’s Wednesday night on the beautiful 3/8-mile paved oval. Powell raced hard and earned his first podium of the night and the season with a 2nd place finish.

Starting in the 3rd spot for the second race a few hours later Powell ran in the top 3 all race long. When a last race caution came out Powell saw his chance and took over lead from his 2nd place restart position on lap 79. The remaining laps of the 125 event were a tight race with the 2nd place car, and Powell held off the challenges bringing home the checkered flag in only his 6th start of the 2018 NPS season.

“I was happy to get back to some oval racing here at Wyant.” Said an excited Powell. “Jay and the Team gave me a great car and the fans got an awesome show tonight in the double feature format. Thanks to the Team and Copp’s and Kubota for their help in our first win!”

Team Manager Jason Hathaway, who had his own success as an NPS driver at Wyant Group Speedway was proud of the Team. “After a tough run at the Indy, it is great to see how successful we were here tonight. A 2nd place podium finish in the first race and then to back it up with a win is huge for Cole and this Team. We have a special group of guys that don’t give up and this win tonight is evidence of that.”

The Team was also proud to carry the name Jaxon Joseph across the back window of their #3 race machine in honour of the Humboldt hockey player that lost his life earlier this year.

The E.H.R Team will take the point lead in the championship battle to the 2nd stop on the western swing at Edmonton International Speedway for the LUXXOR 300 event Saturday July 28th.

Tough Weekend for Powell at Pinty’s Grand Prix

Toronto, Ontario-July 15, 2018– Cole Powell and the #3 Kubota/Copps Building Chevrolet took to the street course of the Toronto Honda Indy yesterday in the Pinty’s Grand Prix of Toronto and earned a 12th place finish.

Powell qualified 12th on the starting grid and the main name of the game was to learn the track and finish the race in one piece.

Powell worked his way through the 1.755-mile street course and endured a number of caution
periods that ate into valuable green lap, experience building time. He and another car spun just after the half way point and restarted in 16th with some fiberglass damage.

Powell dug deep in the final laps of the race under a green, white, checker finish to make some
passes, gaining positions and came home in 12th .

“This wasn’t the result we were hoping for this weekend. This is tough a track because we don’t have a chance to test here ahead of time and practice time is pretty limited. But, this is only my second time on a road course in my racing career and so I think I just need to take one at a time and learn. Thanks to our sponsors for supporting us this weekend and we were happy to run in front of such a great Toronto crowd,” said a disappointed Powell.

The E.H.R Team will regroup and head west in a few weeks for the annual western swing that will
take them to the ovals of Wyant Group Raceway on July 25th for a pair of 125-lap features and then onto Edmonton International Speedway for a 300-lap event July 28.

Double Header Weekend For Ed Hakonson Racing

Stouffville, Ontario – July 11, 2018- This coming weekend will be a busy one for E.H.R as they will field 2 competitive race cars in 2 different provinces and divisions.

E.H.R. will field their NASCAR Pinty’s Series car, #3 Chevrolet driven by Cole Powell, at the Honda Indy Toronto in the Pinty’s Grand Prix. The race weekend will get underway on Friday with practice and qualifying and the main event taking place in front of some of the biggest audiences the Series will see on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m really looking forward to this weekend in front of a great Toronto crowd. I’m excited to get on track on Thursday for the driver walk to see what it is all about before I jump in the car on Friday,” said Cole Powell.

Three provinces over and some 1800 kilometers away in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Jason Hathaway will be competing in Canada’s most competitive and largest late model race to date, the IWK 250 Presented by Steve Lewis. The event draws competition from all over the Maritimes and takes place in front of a sold-out crowd each year. It is a fundraiser for the IWK Children’s hospital in Halifax and a favourite of Hathaway’s.

“We built this late model last year so I could have some fun, but really focused on running this event. This is a charity close to our family and we are really excited about getting back to the track on Saturday. We ran a Parts for Trucks tour race back in June as a warm-up and we think we have a great piece that can be up front for sure this weekend,” said Hathaway, the driver of the #3 Kubota Chevrolet.

The Team is truly proud to be able to field both teams this weekend and is excited about the opportunity. The ability to field 2 competitive race cars is a true testament to the great preparation in the shop, the leadership of Hathaway, the loyalty of the Team’s sponsors and the dedication of the Team’s crew. Go team Go!

The season opener was Powell’s first road course race of his career and the weather played a major part of the weekend.  With showers and fog for most of the day Saturday, qualifying was washed out in the afternoon. Powell did see some track time later on Saturday in an abbreviated 30-minute practice session between showers. He did well and was 10th on the practice chart.

With qualifying washed out, the Clarington 200 starting lineup was determined by 2017 Owner’s points. Starting from the 14th position the focus for the first race of the season was to get seat time and learn.  Powell logged laps and got through his first 2 pit stops for fuel and tires under the direction of Crew Chief Craig Masters.  Powell continued to log laps and by lap 27 was up to the 10th spot.

The 51-lap event played out and the after working through cautions and a few longer runs Cole posted a 6th place in his #3 Kubota Chevrolet.

Team Manager Jason Hathaway was proud of the Team’s finish.  “This was a solid day for us today. P6 in our first road course together is great. The hard work at the shop and the crew’s work this weekend paid off for the team today. Cole kept the car clean and that helps the Team to prepare for the next event. “
