Toronto Sun Article: Hard Work Pays Off For Hathaway

HATHAWAY SHINES AT CANADIAN TIRE SERIES OPENER

One of the feel good stories in Sunday’s NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Vortex Brake Pads 200 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park was the third place finish from Jason Hathaway in the No. 3 Snap-on Tools/Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge.

It was a career best for the talented Hathaway who owns the NCATS iron-man record of appearing in every series race — 78— since it was formed in 2008.

“We worked hard on our road course program this winter,” he said. “We ran up front most of the day and got some great live television for our sponsors and our fans.”

With some great driving and perseverance, Hathaway was up to the 5th spot by lap 20.

“We are very excited to have Jason on board for Greenville.” Said Team owner Jeff Spraker. “He has a proven track record in the very competitive Canadian Tire Series and we look forward to his debut in the K &N Series next weekend. We have a strong track record at Greenville and are confident that Jason can get the job done.  Jason is a welcome asset to our program and we will continue to strive at Greenville to put the best race car under him that we can.”

Currently, the #37 sits 13th in owner points with a number of drivers competing in their equipment in 2012. Top 5 and Top 10 finishes have helped the team to maintain their efforts despite having some tough racing luck earlier in the season.

Plagued by a wrist injury suffered in June of 2011, Hathaway had a positive 2012 campaign.  The beginning of the season got off to a great start and Hathaway showed his ability week in and week out leading races, running out front and postings some impressive finishes; including a 2nd on the road course at the Edmonton Indy, 2nd at the oval of Motoplex in Vernon, BC, 3rd at Delaware Speedway and 5th at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Hathaway recorded an impressive season with 4 top 5 finishes and 6 top 10 finishes. The team battled back from some bad racing luck in the later part of the season and finished 7th in the 2012 Driver Championship Points standings.

Hathaway is excited to hone his skills and expand his driving experience.  “Any time we get the opportunity to try a different kind of racing it’s great. I like to build on my driving resume, trying different styles of cars and tracks. I am really looking forward to taking the helm of the #37 next weekend.  We are proud to have Choko and King Beer on the car as well as Great Lakes Concrete and Fast Eddie Racewear.”

Front Running Hathaway Sidelined At Riverside

September 16, 2012 – Antigonish Nova Scotia The Ed Hakonson Racing/ Team 3 Red race team made the trip east this weekend for the Wilson Equipment 300 at the high banks of Riverside Speedway.

Practice for Jason Hathaway in his #3 Snap-on Tools/Rockstar Energy Drink/Vortex Brake Pads  Dodge went very well. They posted a top 4 on the speed charts and was very comfortable with his car.

“The car feels pretty good and we have a great over the wall crew, which is so important at a track like this. This is a favourite track of ours and we should be good for the race.”  Said Hathaway alongside of his crew chief Craig Masters after practice.

Hathaway posted a team high 3rd place qualifying effort.  The Team was excited about Hathaway’s chances to run well and get the Team program back into its well performing ways.

The race got underway and Hathaway in fine form, in 3rd, ran consistently fast laps and knocked on the door of second place a number of times.  A quick check of the race machine gauges showed that the engine temperature was rising. He backed off his chase of second place hoping to get some air into the engine and get the temperature down.  Unfortunately that wasn’t enough to cool the engine and Hathaway was forced to retire on lap 77.

Hathaway and his crew were frustrated by their early exit. “This is unbelievable.  It is so hard on the sponsors and their support and crew for all the work that they put in each and every week. Our program has made huge strides this year and our cars are great.  We can win in this series and mechanical issues like this are really hard to take.”

Hathaway is 7th in driver’s point’s standings.  The team will make their last stop on the 2012 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series this weekend at Kawartha Speedway, September 22nd.

The Wilson Equipment 300 will air on TSN at 12 noon on September 22nd.  Fans can follow the team on their website www.edhakonsonracing.com , on Twitter @ehrt3r and @jasonhathaway3 . Facebook: team3red.edhakonsonracing

Hard Fought Fight At Barrie For Hathaway

September 9, 2012- Barrie, Ontario– After the postponement of the Wahia Springs 300 on Saturday afternoon, Jason Hathaway in his #3 Snap-on Tools/ Rockstar Energy Drink/Vortex Brake Pads Dodge got back to oval track racing at Barrie Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

Barrie is known for tight racing and is always full of action and this race did not disappoint. Hathaway had a solid qualifying effort; posting a 8th place start on a track wet from extensive rain and overcast skies.

The 300 lap race got started at 1:30 pm and Hathaway set his sights on the top 5 right away. By lap 44, he had made his way up to 6th in the running order.  Hathaway stayed out of trouble logging laps and getting into a rhythm. Crew Chief Craig Masters brought Hathaway’s race machine down pit road for left side tires on lap 137 and Hathaway continued to comfortably run laps in the 5th spot.

Some on track beating and banging forced Hathaway back in the running order. In true Hathaway style though the #3 Snap-on Tools/Rockstar Energy Drink/Vortex Brake Pads Dodge never gave up and worked the tight .333 –mile oval. At the half-way point Hathaway had battled back up to 7th and was in the hunt.

On lap 202 Hathaway got caught up in a car spinning in front of him and did some front end damage to his race car. On the pit stop the crew checked the car over, repaired the damage and sent Hathaway back out to challenge again. With 50 laps to go and a little beat up race car Hathaway was 6th and had his sights on a top 5 finish.  Hampered by numerous cautions and a green white checkered finale cut Hathaway chances short and he finished a hard fought 8th place lacking some front end fiberglass!

“This was a crazy weekend. We had a good top 5 car today, but some crazy driving out there by some drivers beat on our car. We got held up in a few spots with the traffic so tight.”  Said Hathaway. “The crew did a great job getting me in and out of the pits and in contention all afternoon. We had the support of Napoleon Fireplaces & Grills and Choko Motorsports trackside today and it was great to have them all here to watch us in action! We will be ready to go for Riverside next weekend!”

The Wahia Springs 300 with air on TSN on Saturday September 15th at 12 noon eastern. Fans can follow the Team on twitter @jasonhathaway3 & @ehrt3r as well on their website at team3red.com and “Like” them on Facebook.com/team3red.edhakonsonracing
